I love this film. Not only is it very deliberate about its editing and length of takes, but the it inverts a number of Western film tropes/conventions. At the top of the latter list is the camera's "gaze"; usually it's the man's, but Meek's is shot from a woman's perspective with what it ...Read more

For those expecting your stereotypical western, this is not the film for you if you have trouble recognizing deeper messages and cannot handle a movie that doesn't focus on action as entertainment. This is definitely a more artistic film in that it focuses on the travelers mindsets rather ...Read more

A small budget film, this slow mover needs better sound editing, with inconsistent volume, mostly on the low side. Even with the volume on high, it was difficult quite often to hear the conversations. The film should also have been edited for length; it was way too long. Fifteen or twenty ...Read more

The pacing is quite deliberate. The events that the film is based on unfolded slowly, it was a long, slow trek and travel happened slower, in general. It's historical drama that takes accuracy more seriously than others. Also, the sound is also after authenticity, but it is definitely ...Read more

I love Kelly Reichardt and was utterly mesmerized by this film.

Wonderfully authentic feel to it. I don't mind the pace or lack chase scenes or gun fights. trading that stuff in for something more sublime. The director opted for authentic dialogue, what there was of it, and natural lighting instead of an action flick. It sold me.

a good film. saying meek's cutoff is boring says more about your expectations of what a film should do for you and not really a reflection of the film itself. this one shakes you up in a subtle way. the pacing of the film just feels right to me.

This movie lead me on to no climax. Interesting along the way but left the whole thing hanging.

so what do we assume happens in the end?

You might consider this to be an anti-Western like Little Big Man, or Soldier Blue, or Dances with Wolves. For a home movie shot in standard definition on Hi8 tape by trail ride re-enactors it would be ok.

Just to balance out the negative comments, I loved this movie. (My fiancé not so much.) It's a slow burn story with a lot to think about along the way. I found the monotony sort of pleasurable, like a virtual reality experience of being in that place and time for a few hours. The aspect ratio ...Read more

BORING! The trek was arduous and so was the excruciatingly slow pace and limited dialogue. 25 minsutes into it, we opted out.

Stuff, like the camera's 'gaze' being a woman's make this film very enjoyable for me. It's very paced, but I like that because there's a lot of stuff to notice about the shots(Reichardt is an excellent filmmaker). I generally don't even like Western-type films, but this one does it for me. ...Read more

30 minutes into the film I have still to figure out what's going on other than a relentless trek across a barren landscape. The film is mostly long shots and a few middle shots -- no close-ups. This means that it's hard to read body language, even when people are talking. I can hardly ...Read more

Why did they shoot this western in 4:3 with poor focus and low resolution?

'Authentic' depiction of the sacrifice of those wanting a new life in the unknown west. One also feels the quiet strength of the dispossessed native Americans.

How about just critiquing the movie? You have your opinion and other people have theirs. That's what this is for, honest opinions from people who have watched it, not catty insults just because you disagree.
